The Appeal of Post-Apocalyptic Circumstance

Chances are you’ve thought about how life would be in various post-apocalypse situations; mass bombing, zombie breakout, killer robots, or natural disaster. However it happens, the whole world changes for the worse, we lose all comforts of modern life, and a lot of people die. Most people don’t actually want anything like that to happen but the massive amount of movies, T.V. shows, and books portraying these situations show that we find some value in them.

The reason we’re attracted to a ravaged world is because everything suddenly jumps up in value; all relationships, tools, food, or shelter. We suddenly have to fight to live and our absolute best is pulled out of us. Living in the modern developed world is a test that has gotten much easier and a part of us wants it to go back the way it was. Earning life in the ancient sense through hunting, foraging, building, and crafting are much realer ways to prove yourself than the abstract modern analogues for success.

Even in the modern world that’s a large part of what life is really about; finding the real, finding authenticity, finding quality, and avoiding the fake or superficial. No more oversaturation of advertisements in our lives, and no more celebrity dramas. Now you can truly appreciate what matters…while you fight for your life. It’s a give and take.
